SCREENWRITING I:
an introductory workshop designed for those who have never written a screenplay.
Instructor: Myla Churchill, Associate Professor, New York University and Long Island University
SCREENWRITING II:
an advanced workshop intended for those who have developed and completed one or more screenplays. A sample of each student’s work must be submitted before he/she can be accepted into the workshop. Space is limited.

PLAYWRITING I:
a beginning workshop for students who have not previously developed or completed a play.
Instructor: Laurence Holder, award-winning playwright and author of WHEN THE CHICKENS CAME HOME TO ROOST, BUD ‘n MONK, among many others.
PLAYWRITING II:
an advanced workshop for playwrights who have completed one or more plays or are in the process of rewriting a play.
Instructor: Laurence Holder.
WRITING FOR TELEVISION DRAMATIC SERIES:
a workshop which focuses on the step by step process of writing a spec episodic script, a requisite in obtaining a writing position on a television series. Students will write their own script for an ongoing one-hour dramatic television series as they are guided through the practice of developing premise lines, drafting outlines, and writing solid drafts of a script.
Instructor: Susan-Sojourna Collier, Emmy nominee for Outstanding Writing for a Dramatic Series for her work on the ABC Network’s ALL MY CHILDREN.
DIRECTING I:
an introductory workshop on directing for the stage. Students will focus on scene work and learn the elements necessary to interpret a playwright’s words and giving them form and motion on stage. Participants should have some experience in acting, playwriting, and possess some knowledge of the stage. Instructor: Kim Weston-Moran.
MASTER CLASS IN PLAYWRITING:
a workshop which provides an opportunity for advanced playwrights to present excerpts of their work for discussion and critique by renowned professional playwrights such as Samm-Art Williams, Steve Carter, Douglas Turner Ward, Lynn Nottage, Kia Corthron, Paul Carter Harrison, Charles Fuller and others. This workshop will be held on a quarterly basis and will be hosted by Leslie Lee, Tony-nominated, Emmy-nominated, and Obie award-winning playwright and Managing Director of the NEC.
BEGINNING ACTING:
a fundamentals-based workshop for those who are interested in pursuing acting as a career and/or furthering their knowledge of theatre, but have not previously studied acting. This workshop will include both in and out-of-classroom acting exercises. Instructor: Kim Weston-Moran.
INTERMEDIATE ACTING:
a workshop for those who have studied acting at a beginner level and wish to delve deeper into the craft to prepare for an acting career. The focus will be placed on scene work, monologues, and improvisation. Instructor: Marie McKinney.
ADVANCED ACTING:
a scene-intensive and character-focused workshop for those who have completed the intermediate acting workshop and/or have previously acted in plays and wish to further hone their craft or brush off the dust after an absence from the stage. Interested participants will be selected at the discretion of the instructor and may be required to audition. Instructor: Marie McKinney
Writing for Classic American Narrative Film and Avante- Grade Cinema:
In this class we will examine narrative screenwriting for the following genres: Thriller/Horror, Drama, Love story, Action/Adventure, Screwball comedy and Spaghetti Western. Students will be guided to cater to a more sophisticated audience of American cinema. They will learn to weed out the defects of narrative screenwriting in order to complete a genre-based full-length screenplay according to the rules of the format. Instructor: Sophia Romma

MASTER CLASS IN ACTING
methods and techniques of great NEC actors, such as ESTHER ROLLE, MOSES GUNN, FRANCES FOSTER, ADOLPH CAESAR, DOUGLAS TURNER WARD, and ROSCOE LEE BROWN, as learned by veteran stage actor and NEC Artistic Director, CHARLES WELDON. “GIVING BACK WHAT WAS GIVEN!” Once monthly. For professional actors only. Auditions will be required. Saturdays, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Sessions begin on August 14th. Each session, $200.00.

TELEVISION COMEDY WRITING:
a workshop for those interested in writing for a prime-time television series. Only those who have previously written a screenplay or teleplay will be considered for the workshop. Instructor: James Felder, adjunct professor in the Dramatic Writing Program at New York University specializing in television comedy writing.
SCRIPT ANALYSIS BASED ON MODELS OF FIVE AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHTS:
a workshop in which students will read and analyze the plays of Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Susan-Lori Parks, Marie Irene Fornes, and one other playwright of their choosing. They will write and discuss short plays based on these models and participate in a reading before an invited audience at the end of the session. Instructor: Maxine Kern, renowned theater dramaturge, Professor of Dramaturgy at Stonybrook University, and Resident Dramaturge at the Negro Ensemble Company.
COST: $400.00 PER 10-WEEK WORKSHOP.
